Meeting Time :8:30 am

Meeting Spot(s): Take your pick and start the ride at either of the Bean Around the World coffee houses at the following locations:

  • 3598 Main Street (at 20th Ave.)
  • 4456 West 10th Ave (near Sassamat)

Duration:

  • September ~ December: < 3 hours
  • January: 3 - 3.5 hours
  • February ~ March: 3.5 - 4.5 hours

Route: See Diagram. low res[200k] high res[900k]

Fenders:

Some say the fender and fender-extender are the most important part of a successful winter ride! We just say they are mandatory if you want to ride inside the echelon during any wet winter rides. You'll still be welcome to ride at the back of the pack and take turns spraying the other people that forgot to bring out their fendered bike.

September ~ December
This is a great time to start riding with the group as we do the shortest and easiest rides of the year at this time. Once everyone has rendez-vous'd out on the stretch to Iona Beach, the ride continues counter-clockwise around Richmond (see map above) in a steady, fun pace.

January
The Holidays are over and so it's time to start working! The main difference to the ride now is that we start adding in the River Road extension, however, the circuit around Richmond is still nice and steady. The River Road paceline is done in two (or three if there are enough people!) groups depending on your experience and/or ability level. The objective is to go hard eastbound out towards the Queensborough Bridge in an organized and steady echelon. This is a good time to work on following wheels and learning how to make smooth transitions from the fast lane (moving forward) to the slower lane (moving back).

February ~ March/ April
Now the ride gets a little longer with one more paceline section added: the 2nd Iona Beach run. After finishing the Richmond circuit, some riders will continue back to Iona Beach doing an additional paceline effort. This one is a little more informal (usually one group), but it is still done in the same echelon format as River Road. Then, with a couple of km's to go (and a good cross-wind usually!), watch out as things start to wind up for the big sprint into the final parking lot! This is also the time of year when a few of the members participate in the annual March training races put on by deVo/Escape Velocity. Don't worry, though, there will always be a Saturday ride going on around Richmond. Ready for spring/summer?

*Once we come back to the Arthur Lang bridge, the "official" ride is over, however, there is always a group heading out and around UBC via Marine Drive and finishing up on Chancellor Boulevard for the final, infamous "sprint"! The best part comes after this as everyone heads over to the Bean on 10th Ave. for a hot drink and food.
In December some members will start adding the River Road extension on to the ride, but it will be done as an easy double paceline.
