Evening of Champions a Success
More than $100K raised for the BC Cancer Foundation

Event organizer Philip Meyer with Eddy and Axel On Friday, October 28th the Wedgewood Cycling Team hosted an Evening of Champions with two of cycling's greatest riders – Eddy and Axel Merckx.

Hosted at the Vancouver Club, the sold-out fundraising banquet brought in more than $100K in proceeds for cancer research in British Columbia through ticket sales, an event raffle, and a silent auction.

Eddy and Axel Merckx held a press conference prior to the fundraising gala and spoke to dinner guests about their reasons for supporting the cancer research.

"Cancer has affected my son's mother-in-law, my friends and my fellow riders in the cycling community,” said Eddy Merckx before the dinner. “I am happy that my first visit to Vancouver is to support cancer research through the BC Cancer Foundation. I hope it can make a difference.”

Axel Merckx spends his off-season with his wife Jodi in her home town Kelowna, B.C. He jumped at the opportunity to help with the event, when his mother-in law, Colleen Cross, a breast cancer survivor asked him for his support.

Eddy and Axel with Vancouver Mayor Larry CampbellWith Philip Meyer – local cycling enthusiast, cancer survivor, and general manager of the Wedgewood Hotel – leading the show, and the support of Mary McNeil, BC Cancer Foundation President and CEO, the Evening of Champions became a sure thing.

Three-hundred guests attended the event, including Vancouver Major Larry Campbell, who continues to be a strong advocate for cycling. His vision for cycling in Vancouver is as a leader and a nation-wide centre of excellence.

Wedgewood Cycling Team with Eddy and AxelThanks to the enthusiastic support of the Merckx and Cross families, volunteers, sponsors, contributors and guests, the event was a huge success. Proceeds from the event have been donated to the BC Cancer Foundation to a breast cancer program at the BC Cancer Agency in Kelowna, and testicular cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver.

Thank you to everyone – particularly the Merckx and Cross families – for helping to make the evening truly a night for champions!
