Axel and Jodi Merckx popped into Vancouver on Friday September 22, 2006 to see the big ticket in town that night - Sheryl Crow and John Mayer.
They managed to spend a few hours with PM at the Wedgewood Hotel to catch up and chat about the year that was. Over lunch at the Hotel, Axel described the celebrations in Paris at the conclusion of the Tour, and how that exhilaration quickly turned to disappointment and then disbelief. He talked about life after Phonak, his plans for the future and, of course, the Evening Of Champions in Vancouver.
Axel, Jodi and WCT had planned to bring Tour de France Champion Floyd Landis to Vancouver this fall along with celebrated commentator Phil Ligget to host an Evening of Champions 2006. Things changed quickly after the Tour, and all parties agreed that the climate was not right to move forward with the event this year. The new objective is to start planning the 2007 edition of the event that will again raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation in Kelowna and Vancouver.
Axel will officially announce his signing to the T-Mobile team on Wednesday, September 27 and is already suggesting possible celebrity guests to welcome to Vancouver for the Evening of Champions next year!
